Thought for the Day

"If one should give me a dish of sand, and tell me there were particles of iron in it, I might look for them with my eyes, and search for them with my clumsy fingers, and be unable to detect them; but let me take a magnet and sweep through it; and my, how it draw to itself the almost invisible particles by the mere power of attraction! The unthinking heart, like my finger in the sand, discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day, and as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings. -- Henry Ward Beecher"

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."...

today I planted a flower..in fact, I planted several flowers...
my beautiful purple petunia's died ??? and most of the marigolds ??? so I've started over...the plumbago is hardy, drought resistant, loves the sun and blooms all season...as well as the lantana and bougainvillea (in hanging baskets)..

I was sitting at my computer desk and looked out the window in time to see a red bird perched in the planter beside the pink vinca....'took off before I could get a picture...

In honor of our 56 years together..

Tornado...Mena, Ar...April 10, 2009 : ( Sad

This clip from YouTube shows the destruction very graphically. The first part is a slide show of pictures...some the same as my pictures...it's over 7 min.long but the last min. is a video you should watch...so at the very least slide toward the end and view the video..

I took these photos April 25...almost 3 weeks after the tornado...all the streets had been cleared of trees, etc... Emergency management officials in Polk County said about 1,000 homes were damaged or destroyed
200 homes were destroyed by the twister, 400 homes sustained moderate damage, and another 400 sustained minor damage in the storm that killed three and injured many.

A Very Good Day

I may not be going to Alabama for David and Cooper's birthday but I did get to spend the day with Laura and her family.
Bob and I drove over to Canton in time to attend church with Ben and Laura.

We had Subway sandwiches at home and our granddaughters, Summer and Heather, came over with their husbands and children.
These two are our grandsons(in-law), Kyle and Lee
(gee, I didn't realize how short I am)

The studious one (Laura Beth) had to return to school in Natchitoches, La.

Jason was there for a few moments...

so we got to see all four of our "Canton" grandchildren. It's only about 70 miles from here but we don't get over there nearly often enough.
The weather was sunny and mild, although very windy...the guys went out to see Kiles new plane..

Benjamin and Gabriel had fights with bamboo...

played in a pile of dirt left over from installation of the sprinkler system...

the boys found bugs

and Kiley did her "little girl"things

We got home around 4 pm...took a two hour nap and then met our two sons at Kellers for a hamburger and beer!!

3 years old...and I'm not there : (

Everything's been different
All the day long,
Lovely things have happened,
Nothing has gone wrong.

Nobody has scolded me,
Everyone has smiled.
Isn't it delicious
To be a birthday child?

Stellan is in Boston preparing for surgery

http://kstp.com
"Thousands follow journey of Mound infant's battle."

The five-month-old Mound boy, known around the world for his courageous fight against a heart condition, will travel to Boston, Mass. Thursday for a rare and risky surgery.
Doctors in Boston will perform a surgery called an ablation on Stellan McKinney next Tuesday.
"Up until then they'll observe him, get a feel for how stubborn his case is and try to get him off his meds because he needs to be off them for the surgery. The go in for the oblation and hope it ends with that," said his mother Jennifer McKinney.
Earlier this month, the five-month-old child from Mound received his first blood transfusion. While he’s doing better, doctors say his prognosis is still uncertain.

McKinney was 20 weeks pregnant when he was diagnosed with SVT or supraventricular tachycardia—essentially KcKinney's heartbeat was too fast.
But Stellan fought and was born healthy and stayed that way, until late March. Stellan has since been at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis fighting for his life.

Thousands of people around the world are following his story through his mother's blog. http://www.mycharmingkids.net/ McKinney says her website is approaching seven million hits—which averages out to 20 to 30 hits every five seconds.

great-grandchildren...3 of my 9

We enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with our granddaughter Kristi and her sidekick, Rusty...He enjoys cooking and always prepares enough food for an army...most likely because there are 6 kids in the house...his three older teenagers and her three little ones......'don't get to see them as often as we did when we had our house ...now that we're in the apartment it's a bit crowded over here ...'miss the times we would be together with all the other great- grandchildren in the family...sometimes as many as all nine of them, along with our two "younger" grandchildren--running in and out of the house...chasing each other up and down the "hill" in the backyard, little ones in the sand box or repeatedly going up and down the slide.

I'm so proud of these three...K is a member of a Christian Fellowship Assn. (unable to bring to mind the exact name...and has also received recognition from the National Junior Honor Society...she's becoming such a lovely person.. to the eye as well as her character and her heart..The boys are as loving and kind as they've always been.

Rusty prepared one of his specialities..bacon-wrapped jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese...ummmmm

Mena, Ar

Driving up Rich Mt....1955
It saddened me to hear that Mena was struck by a tornado this week. We lived in that little town in 1955-56. Bob was a "sales rep" and his company transferred us to Mena from Memphis. Our second child, Laura, was born there and the next door neighbors we had almost 55 years ago, Bill and Beth Shipman, remain dear friends to this day. They are no longer living in Mena, nor any other friends that we had at the time but we return often....it's only a five hour drive from Dallas.
Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is situated atop Rich Mt. about 12 miles "up" from the town. They offer camping sites as well...and we've also enjoyed aome camping there. It's a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and a good place for children to play outdoors in the wide open expense of the yard that surrounds it, the playground areas, miniature golf, small train ride...a few things to do but its not a crowded, commercialized place like so many vacation spots are today. Six years ago when our family was celebrating our 50th. wedding anniversary we all spent a weekend together there. I think we needed about 10 rooms to accomadate us. Last year Bob and I were back for our 55th. wedding anniversary and in two weeks we will be there again on our 56th. anniversary weekend.
We've also stayed at a lovely place in town...The Carriage House. I believe that it actually was a carriage house at one time. It, along with the large Victorian home on the property had been purchased and restored by a young couple who moved back to Mena from Dallas a few years ago. I seem to recall that Mena was the wife's home town and she desired to raise her children there.

The Lodge is very historical..It was constructed in 1898; was closed in 1910 and fell into ruins. It was rebuilt in 1963 but was destroyed by fire 10 years later. The State of Ar. declared the area a state park and the lodge was rebuilt for the second time and opened for business in 1975. When we were living there it was just a shamble of stone and rocksbut we would ride up there with friends just to have something to do and enjoy the beautiful view of the valleys below. There was little TV reception in Mena...so we would go up on the mountain where radio reception was better and listen, on the car radio, to "Gillette's Wednesday Night Fights are on the air"...(radio airwaves that is) ....Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Joe Lewis, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, etc. Bob liked boxing....but I digress...

I know from the news that the tornado hit downtown...I sure hope that the lovely older homes of Mena were not destroyed.... We're anticipating what we will see when we're back there the 24th.

The Reason For The Season...

Matthew 27:50-53
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.(NIV)

Why baby chicks, rabbits and spring flowers at Easter?...they represent "new life"...as our new life in Christ
